Piazza Ascona, Ticino

Lake Maggiore jagged banks are surrounded by the Prealps of Piedmont and Lombardy. The most northerly section extends thirteen kilometres into Switzerland, where it constitutes the lowest point above sea-level in that entire country.

The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants.

The Piazza in Ascona is right on the lake making it a beautiful place for a leisurely stroll. In this photo we see colorful boats on the blue Mediterranean like water of the lake .

Verzasca Valley

One of the most beautiful valleys in Switzerland has to be the Valle Verzasca. The jade green glacier water and incredible rock formations are stunning on a sunny day. In this gorgeous valley one can find the smallest municipality in Switzerland, Corippo (see post Village of Corippo, Ticino) as well as the Contra dam (or Verzasca dam). The dam forms Lago di Vogorno, an artificial reservoir. It is the 25th tallest dam in the world. The dam is famous for the opening scene of the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye.

This photograph really highlights the green river and interesting rock formations that can be enjoyed during a trip up the valley. A fine art print of this photo is available for purchase buy clicking the image or here.

The picture is also one of the photos featured in the book “Switzerland In View – A Photographic Essay” .

Village of Corippo, Ticino

Village of Corippo, Ticino

Ticino offers one of the four represented cultures of Switzerland, namely Italian.

Long the Verczasca Valley one comes across the tiny village of Corippo, in fact it is the smallest municipality in Switzerland with a population of just 17.

Located at the north end of the artificial Lake Vogorno Corippo is just 20 km from Italy. The houses are built from the local Ticino granite with slate roofs and have changed little for several hundred years, leading the Italian writer Piero Bianconi to describe Corippo as “Verzasca’s gentlest village”. Its early 17th century Church was extended in the late eighteenth century. Corippo’s architectural value has caused the entire village centre to be placed under a conservation order, and in 1975 the European Architectural Heritage Congress named the village as an “exemplary model” for historical preservation.
