The Rhine River is one of the longest and most important rivers in Europe at 1,320 kilometres. The Rhine’s origins are in the Swiss Alps in the canton of Graubünden, where its two main initial tributaries are called Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein.

In these two images we see the rock walls of the Rofflaschlucht (Roffla Gorge) reflected in a calm pool of glacier water of the Hinterrhein. Both photographs are available as Fine Art Giclée prints by clicking in the individual images or the link below the photo.

The rail viaduct over the Landwasser River in Switzerland is a 65m high and 136m long six-arched curved single-tracked viaduct high in the Alps. Built 1902 it is possibly one of the most famous railway viaducts in the world. When approaching the viaduct the train travels through the Landwasser tunnel. It had to be built by starting at the end of the tunnel.

The construction of the viaduct is impressive for two reasons:

1. Materials had to be transported to this remote mountain site before construction could begin.

2. The height of the arches meant that traditional building techniques could not be used and new techniques had to be developed.

Lake Maggiore jagged banks are surrounded by the Prealps of Piedmont and Lombardy. The most northerly section extends thirteen kilometres into Switzerland, where it constitutes the lowest point above sea-level in that entire country.

The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants.

The Piazza in Ascona is right on the lake making it a beautiful place for a leisurely stroll. In this photo we see colorful boats on the blue Mediterranean like water of the lake .

The Via Mala Gorge, 5 km from Thusis, is the largest gorge in the canton of Graubünden. The gorge in parts is only a few meters wide, with rocks up to 300 m high. This narrow gorge was formed by the Hinterrhein River, a headstream of the Rhine.

One of the most wild and picturesque gorges in Switzerland, the Via Mala is walled by vertical limestone cliffs as the Splügen Road passes above the gorge. To experience the Via Mala fully, one should descend the 321 safe steps to the Rhine, admire the and dramatically carved cliffs”whirl-pots” as seen in this photograph.

One of the most beautiful valleys in Switzerland has to be the Valle Verzasca. The jade green glacier water and incredible rock formations are stunning on a sunny day. In this gorgeous valley one can find the smallest municipality in Switzerland, Corippo (see post Village of Corippo, Ticino) as well as the Contra dam (or Verzasca dam). The dam forms Lago di Vogorno, an artificial reservoir. It is the 25th tallest dam in the world. The dam is famous for the opening scene of the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye.

This photograph really highlights the green river and interesting rock formations that can be enjoyed during a trip up the valley.
